Tennessee Computer Science: 1st Grade

This course is aligned to TN standards and is designed to provide computer science instruction for Tennessee first grade students. It is meant to be taught approximately once per week. This course also includes interdisciplinary lessons in math, science, ELA, and social studies to support cross-curricular integration.

  • Optional Review

    Students refresh foundational skills through interactive lessons, coding card games, and a story-driven adventure that reviews core programming concepts.

  • Getting Started

    Students learn how computers work, explore responsible technology use, practice positive online behavior, and apply computational thinking to everyday routines.

  • Sequences & Events

    Students create programs with hide-and-seek games and practice debugging to find and fix errors in their code.

  • Loops & Message Events

    Students use loops and messages to create programs where characters interact with each other, modeling predator-prey relationships and coordinating character actions.

  • Pages & Grid

    Students design games that move between multiple pages and use grid-based navigation to create maze-solving programs.

  • Culmination Projects

    Students apply design thinking to plan, create, and revise programs that model solutions to simple real-world problems.

  • Digital Literacy

    Students explore different types of software, learn spreadsheet basics, conduct guided research, work with data, understand AI concepts, and practice giving credit to creators.

  • Interdisciplinary Computer Science

    Students integrate coding with place value, story problems, telling time, shape division, life cycles, phonics, storytelling, and understanding how technology impacts the world.
